Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Chestnut-colored Woodpecker (Celeus castaneus), Chestnut Woodpecker (Celeus elegans) and Pale-crested Woodpecker (Celeus lugubris). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Pale-crested Woodpecker (Celeus lugubris). Nominate and subspecies ochraceus appear to intergrade in central-eastern Brazil (south-western Bahia to Espírito Santo), where intermediate subspecies intercedens seems to be absent.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
ochraceus (von Spix, 1824) - Eastern Brazil, from western Pará (south of Amazon) to Atlantic coast and south to eastern Bahia and Espírito Santo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ochre-backed Woodpecker (Celeus ochraceus).
intercedens Hellmayr, 1908 - Western Bahia to Goiás and Minas Gerais.
flavescens (Gmelin, 1788) - Central-eastern and south-eastern Brazil (southern Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul) to eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
