Nest
A large chamber at the end of a burrow, lined with feathers. In colonies.
Eggs (Guide)
1; white, usually lightly spotted with red-brown, especially at the larger end; oval; about 34 x 24 mm. Incubation: 39 - 48 days; by both sexes in 48 hr shifts.
Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 60 days. Fed by both parents.
Subspecies
Possible subspecies maorianus (taken off New Zealand) may be extinct.

oceanicus (Kuhl, 1820) - Subantarctic islands, from Cape Horn east to Kerguelen Is.
exasperatus Mathews, 1912 - South Shetland, South Sandwich Is, coastal Antarctica.
chilensis Murphy, 1936 - Range incompletely known. Breeds Tierra del Fuego; ranges north to Peru.
