Status CR
Habitat loss through agricultural conversion, incidental poisoning, persecution and at least historically, the loss of wild ungulates, are the main threats.

rueppelli (Brehm, 1852) - South-western Mauritania east to Sudan, north to Aír Massif (north-western Niger) and south to Uganda, Kenya and northern Tanzania.
erlangeri Salvadori, 1908 - Ethiopia, Eritrea and north-western Somalia, possibly ranging to southern Arabia.
Similar Species
Within its range this species could be confused with Eurasian Griffon (Gyps fulvus) or White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus), however, both of those species are less mottled and have uniform light brown body plumage. White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) has an all dark bill.
