Estimated population is 400 - 500 (2010) and stable.

Status VU
Competition for food with introduced feral cats and other predators is perhaps the main threat.

Nest
A platform of sticks located on a prominent lava outflow, rocky outcrop or in a small tree.

Subspecies
Closely related to White-tailed Hawk (Geranoaetus albicaudatus), with which forms superspecies, perhaps also including Variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma) and Puna Hawk (Buteo poecilochrous).

No subspecies.
