Voice
Song is a fairly rapid, monotone five-note 'tu-tau-tau-tau-tau'. Call is a rapid, harsh 'kek-kek-kek-kek-krrekkkk...', the last note longer and trilled.

Nest
In a cavity of a rotten tree-stump probably 1 - 2 m above the ground.
Subspecies
Populations from southern Myanmar across to southern Indochina sometimes separated as subspecies stellae, but probably indistinguishable from uniformis.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
uniformis (Robinson, 1917) - Eastern and southern Myanmar, south-western China (southern Yunnan) and Vietnam south to Sumatra.
nias Meyer de Schauensee & Ripley, 1940 - Nias I (off north-western Sumatra).
