Nest
In a hole, of an old woodpeckers nest or self excavated, usually in an old pine, cedar or oak tree about 3 - 15 m above the ground.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

A member of a species group that contains also Corsican Nuthatch (Sitta whiteheadi), Krueper's Nuthatch (Sitta krueperi), Snowy-browed Nuthatch (Sitta villosa), Yunnan Nuthatch (Sitta yunnanensis) and Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis), and all sometimes thought to form a superspecies. Differs from others of group in being slightly larger and less restricted to coniferous forest. Recent evidence from mitochondrial DNA suggests that its closest relative is Krueper's Nuthatch (Sitta krueperi), with Corsican Nuthatch (Sitta whiteheadi), Snowy-browed Nuthatch (Sitta villosa) and Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) more distantly related (no Yunnan Nuthatch (Sitta yunnanensis) material was available for analysis).
