Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status LC
Habitat destruction through forest loss and fragmentation is the main threat.

Subspecies
Often placed in genus Priotelus, but shows significant differences from Cuban Trogon (Priotelus temnurus) in bill pattern, plumage coloration and some morphological features.
