Habitat
Wetlands, favouring the cover of tree roots and overhanging branches.

Canada, Cuba, Mexico, St Pierre and Miquelon (P), USA (B).

Vagrant to Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Denmark, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Iceland, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Turks and Caicos Islands.

Western, central and south-eastern North America; western Cuba.
 
Population
Estimated population is 3,500,000 (2010).
