Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic studies indicate that this species is closest to Manda Boubou (Laniarius nigerrimus), the two composing a clade (lineage) that is deeper-branched than, or sister to, Tropical Boubou (Laniarius aethiopicus), Turati's Boubou (Laniarius turatii), Southern Boubou (Laniarius ferrugineus), Zanzibar Boubou (Laniarius sublacteus), Swamp Boubou (Laniarius bicolor), Yellow-crowned Gonolek (Laniarius barbarus), Black-headed Gonolek (Laniarius erythrogaster), Papyrus Gonolek (Laniarius mufumbiri) and Yellow-breasted Boubou (Laniarius atroflavus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • ruficeps (Shelley, 1885)   -  North-western Somalia.
  • rufinuchalis (Sharpe, 1895)   -  EC, southern and south-eastern Ethiopia and central and southern Somalia (except south-eastern coast).
  • kismayensis (Erlanger, 1901)   -  Southern Somalia coastal lowlands and north-eastern and south-eastern Kenya.
