Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry shrubland. From sea-level - 2,000 m.
Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda.
Vagrant to Congo [The Democratic Republic of the].
Djibouti, Ethiopia and south-eastern Sudan south to Tanzania.

Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Mozambique Nightjar (Caprimulgus fossii ), and these two form superspecies with Long-tailed Nightjar (Caprimulgus climacurus ). All have frequently been separated in genus Scotornis . Northern populations formerly awarded separate subspecies, apatelius .
