Vagrant to Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong (China), Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Morocco, Nepal, Netherlands Antilles, North Korea, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom.

Has been treated under name Oenanthe leucomela, but current name has priority.

Probably forms a superspecies with Cyprus Wheatear (Oenanthe cypriaca). Formerly considered conspecific, but vocally very different. Sometimes considered conspecific with Black-eared Wheatear (Oenanthe hispanica). The two hybridize where breeding ranges overlap, with no evidence of assortative mating, and possibly better reunited as one species.
