Habitat
Hot desert. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Algeria, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Israel (B), Jordan (B) (NB), Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Palestinian Authority Territories (B), Saudi Arabia (B), Sudan, Tunisia, Western Sahara (B), Yemen (B).

Vagrant to Bahrain, Cyprus, Greece, Iran [Islamic Republic of], Kuwait, Malta, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Some specimens of nominate subspecies along Red Sea coast indistinguishable from ernesti so variation may be clinal. Proposed subspecies aegra (western and central Sahara) synonymized with nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucopyga (Brehm, 1855)   -  Western and central Sahara east to Egypt and Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti.
  • ernesti Meinertzhagen, R, 1930   -  Southern Israel, southern Jordan and north-eastern Egypt (Sinai) south to central and eastern Arabia and Yemen.
  • aegra Hartert, E, 1913   -  Rocky deserts of Mauritania to Tunisia.
