Subspecies rufilatus rather distinctive in both plumage and voice, possibly better treated as a separate species. Proposed subspecies pallidior (north-western Himalayas) synonymized with rufilatus.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • cyanurus (Pallas, 1773)   -  Finland and north-western Russia, and from Ural Mts east to Kamchatka, south to northern Mongolia, Japan and north-eastern China. Non-breeding southern and south-eastern Asia.
  • rufilatus (Hodgson, 1845)   -  North-western, central and eastern Himalayas east to central and southern China, probably also northern Myanmar. Non-breeding also Indochina. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Himalayan Bush-Robin (Tarsiger rufilatus).
