Vagrant to Afghanistan, Belgium, France, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Malta, Nigeria, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom.

N, central and eastern Europe eastern in narrow band to northern Kazakhstan and upper R Yenisey, also Caucasus. Non-breeding eastern and south-eastern Africa.
 
Population
Estimated population is 15,000,000 - 40,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Genus has occasionally been merged into Erithacus. Hybridization with Common Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos) rare.
