Habitat
Montane forest with thick understorey.

China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Russia (Asian), Russia (Central Asian) (B), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Belgium, France, Germany, Hong Kong (China), Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands Antilles, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Shy and secretive. Forages on the ground or in understorey.

Food
Worms, insects, small fruits.

Voice
Song is a loud series of phrases 'choi chuririri', the last note reverberating with strong harmonics.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • sibirica (Pallas, 1776)   -  Central and eastern Siberia south to northern Mongolia, northern Manchuria and Russian Far East. Non-breeding south-eastern Asia south to Greater Sundas.
  • davisoni (Hume, 1877)   -  Sakhalin, southern Kuril Is and Japan. Non-breeding south-eastern China south to southern Sundaic region.
