Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 520,000 (2010).

Status LC
Habitat alteration, conversion of foraging areas, development, industrialisation and intensification of agriculture, loss of roof-top nesting sites on modern buildings, hunting are the main threats.

Food
Fish, frogs, small mammals and insects.

Voice
Mostly silent, but a loud, non-vocal billing-clapping at nesting sites.

Nest
Mass of twigs on a roof top and occasionally in a tree. In loose colonies of up to 30 pairs or solitary.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 5; white.

Subspecies
Until recently considered to include Oriental Stork (Ciconia boyciana), but now generally accepted as separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • ciconia (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Europe, western Asia, southern Africa. Winters mostly tropical Africa and southern Africa.
  • asiatica Severtsov, 1873   -  Turkestan. Winters Iran to India.
