Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, dry forest, arable land.

Algeria (B), Bulgaria (P), Comoros, Croatia (Local Name: Hrvatska) (B), Cyprus (B) (P), Egypt, Eritrea, France (B) (P), Gibraltar (P), Greece (B) (P), Israel, Italy (B) (P), Kenya, Macedonia [The Former Yugoslav Republic of] (B), Madagascar, Malawi, Malta (P), Mayotte, Montenegro (B), Morocco (B), Portugal, Serbia (B), Somalia, Spain (B), Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Tunisia (B), Turkey (B).

Vagrant to Bahrain, Côte dIvoire, Denmark, Djibouti, French Southern Territories, Hungary, Jordan, Lebanon, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Poland, Réunion, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, Sweden, Syrian Arab Republic, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom.

Islands and rocky coasts from Canary Is and north-western Morocco east through Mediterranean to Lemnos, northern Sporades, Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete and Cyprus. Winters mainly in Madagascar, but also in eastern Africa and Mascarene Is.
 
Population
Estimated population is 18,000 - 18,600 (2010).
