Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland, temperate grassland, dry savanna. From sea-level 3,000 m, occasionally to 7,900 m.

Subspecies
Often regarded as conspecific with Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax), but morphological studies have shown clear differences which should also be verified by molecular techniques.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • orientalis Cabanis, 1854   -  South-eastern European Russia east to L Balkhash and eastern Kazakhstan, or perhaps to Tien Shan and Altai. Winters in Middle East, Arabia and eastern and southern Africa.
  • nipalensis Hodgson, 1833   -  Altai and Tibet east to Manchuria. Winters in southern Asia.
