Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Albania (B) (NB), Armenia (B), Azerbaijan (B), Bosnia and Herzegovina (B), Bulgaria (B) (P), Croatia (Local Name: Hrvatska) (B), Cyprus, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia (B) (P), Greece (B) (P), Hungary (B), Iran [Islamic Republic of] (B), Iraq (P), Israel (P), Jordan (P), Kazakhstan (B), Lebanon (P), Macedonia [The Former Yugoslav Republic of] (B), Moldova [Republic of] (B) (NB), Montenegro (B), Romania (B), Russia (European) (B), Serbia (B), Spain (NB), Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, Turkey (B), Ukraine (B), Yemen.

Vagrant to Austria, Bahrain, Cameroon, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Czech Republic, Italy, Kenya, Kuwait, Niger, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, Tanzania [United Republic of], United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan.

South-eastern Europe, south-western Ukraine and southern Russia east to western Kazakhstan; more locally in Turkey, Caucasus and Iran. Thought to winter mainly in eastern Sahel zone of sub Saharan Africa.
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 100,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly considered a subspecies of Shikra (Accipiter badius). Forms superspecies with Shikra (Accipiter badius) and Nicobar Sparrowhawk (Accipiter butleri).
