Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) and also occasionally with Himalayan Griffon (Gyps himalayensis). Forms superspecies with Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) and probably with Ruppell's Vulture (Gyps rueppelli). Possibly also with Himalayan Griffon (Gyps himalayensis) and Indian Vulture (Gyps indicus). Population of Punjab Salt Range (Pakistan), erroneously described as subspecies jonesi of Indian Vulture (Gyps indicus), actually belongs to subspecies fulvescens of present species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
fulvus (Hablizl, 1783) - North-western Africa and Iberian Peninsula east through Balkans, Turkey, Middle East, Arabia and Iran to Pamirs and Altai.
fulvescens Hume, 1869 - Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India east to Assam.
