Vagrant to Bahrain, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Lebanon, Malta, Nepal, Russia (Central Asian).

Unknown to United Arab Emirates.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Birds of Iberia and north-western Africa formerly separated as subspecies aragonica. Possible subspecies enigmaticus, koslovae and bangsi now included in nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • orientalis (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Iberian Peninsula, Canary Is (Fuerteventura, Lanzarote) and north-western Africa from Morocco to north-western Libya. Also Cyprus, Israel, Anatolia and Armenia.
  • arenarius (Pallas, 1775)   -  North-western Kazakhstan east to north-western China (north-western Xinjiang), and south to Iran, Afghanistan and south-western Pakistan (Baluchistan).
