Subspecies
Asian populations (east of Syria) sometimes separated as subspecies arenicolor, but variation is clinal, with birds increasing in size towards east.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
saharae Erlanger, 1899 - Central and east-central Morocco, northern (and occasionally south) Algeria, central Tunisia, probably north-western Libya, and possibly eastern towards northern Egypt. Winters in western Sahel.
aegyptius Lichtenstein, 1823 - North-eastern Egypt and northern Arabian Peninsula, east to extreme central-western China, north-eastern Kazakhstan, Tadjikistan, extreme western Pakistan and south-eastern Iran. Winters in eastern Sahel.
