Vagrant to Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Czech Republic, Denmark, Faroe Islands, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands Antilles, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia (Slovak Republic) (NB), Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine (NB), United Kingdom.

Estimated population is 130,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Siberian populations, formerly separated as pallasi, included in nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • ulula (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Northern Eurasia east to Kamchatka and Sakhalin, central Siberia south to Tarbagatay.
  • tianschanica Smallbones, 1906   -  Central Asia and north-western and north-eastern China, possibly also northern Mongolia.
  • caparoch (Müller, PLS, 1776)   -  Alaska through Canada to Newfoundland, south to extreme northern USA.
