Circumpolar, on Arctic coasts.

Estimated population is 6,200,000 - 6,800,000 (2010).

Food
Mainly molluscs and crustaceans, including mussels, cockles, clams and crabs. Also small fish, plant material.

Voice
Very noisy, males uttering a yodelling call, heard throughout the year, and at any time of day or night.

On the ground, close to water.
