Estimated population is 3,200,000 - 3,800,000 (2010).

Seeds, aquatic plants and insects.

Voice
Male, a nasal 'mair' or a rasping croak, often uttered in flight. Female, a quiet quack.

Nest
On the ground beside water.

Eggs (Guide)
Usually 8 - 12; pale yellowish-buff; ellipsoidal. Incubation: about 28 days; by male. Color is similar to that of the Eurasian Wigeon (Mareca penelope).

Subspecies
Subspecies couesi, Coues' Gadwall, described from Washington and New York Is, central Pacific, apparently not seen after its discovery in 1874 and considered extinct.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • strepera (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Widespread over great part of Palearctic and Nearctic Regions.
  • couesi ! (Streets, 1876)   -  Tabuaeran Is. (Kiribati). Extinct.
