Wooded rivers and lakes.

China (mainland) (B) (NB), Japan (B) (NB), North Korea (B), Russia (Asian) (B), South Korea (B) (NB), Taiwan (China) (NB).

Vagrant to Hong Kong (China) (NB), India (NB), Mongolia (NB), Myanmar (NB), Nepal (NB), Russia (Central Asian), Spain, Thailand (NB), Vietnam (NB).

Introduced to Austria (B), Belgium (B), Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands Antilles (B), Slovenia, Switzerland, United Kingdom (B) (NB).

Scattered in south-eastern USSR, north-eastern China, Japan. Introduced in southern England.
 
Population
Estimated population is 65,000 - 66,000 (2010).

Food
Plant material, including seeds, nuts, aquatic insects and small invertebrates, like snails.

Voice
Mostly silent. Males, a soft whistle during display. Female, a soft croak, often given in flight.

In a hole of a tree.
