Angola, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Israel (E) (B), Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia (B), Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Algeria, Benin, China (mainland), Côte dIvoire, Cyprus, France, Ghana, Hungary, Malta, Oman, Spain, Syrian Arab Republic, Togo.

Introduced to Austria, Belgium (B), Denmark (B), Netherlands Antilles (B), United Arab Emirates (B), United Kingdom (B) (NB).

Africa south of Sahara, Nile Valley. Introduced in Britain.
 
Population
Estimated population is 210,000 - 510,000 (2010).

Food
Mainly leaves and seeds of cereal crops.

Voice
Mostly silent. Male, a husky, wheezing. Female, a high-pitched 'hur, hur, hur, hur'.
