Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wren (Campylorhynchus rufinucha).
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
nigricaudatus (Nelson, 1897) - Southern Mexico (Chiapas) and western Guatemala.
capistratus (Lesson, R, 1842) - Pacific coast of El Salvador and Nicaragua south to north-western Costa Rica.
xerophilus (Griscom, 1930) - Motagua Valley (Guatemala).
castaneus Ridgway, 1888 - Interior of Guatemala east to Honduras and Nicaragua.
nicaraguae (Miller, W & Griscom, 1925) - Nicaragua.
nicoyae Phillips, AR, 1986 - Nicoya Peninsula, in north-western Costa Rica.
