Subspecies
Genus formerly subsumed in Molothrus. Sometimes treated as conspecific with Pale Baywing (Agelaioides fringillarius), but the two differ in plumage coloration, vocalizations and some details of social behaviour. Behaviour suggests close relationship with monotypic genera Gnorimopsar and Oreopsar, and this is supported by molecular data. Subspecies probably intergrade in Bolivia.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
badius (Vieillot, 1819) - Eastern Bolivia (Beni) and southern Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul) south to southern Argentina (northern Chubut) and Uruguay.
bolivianus (Hellmayr, 1917) - Central and southern Bolivia.
