Subspecies
Cacicus chrysonotus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was previously split into Cacicus chrysonotus and Cacicus leucoramphus following Stotz et al. (1996), but this treatment is no longer adopted, following SACC (2005).
Formerly placed in genus Archiplanus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
chrysonotus Lafresnaye & d'Orbigny, 1838 - Andes of Peru (from Junín) south to central Bolivia (Santa Cruz).
leucoramphus (Bonaparte, 1845) - Andes of western Venezuela (Táchira) and Colombia (all three cordilleras) south to south-eastern Ecuador (Loja). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Mountain Cacique (Cacicus leucoramphus).
peruvianus J. T. Zimmer, 1924 - Eastern slope of Andes of Peru (Amazonas south to Junín). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Northern Mountain Cacique (Cacicus leucoramphus).
