Subspecies
No subspecies.
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Bar-tailed Lark (Ammomanes cinctura), and in the past considered conspecific. However, it is more similar morphologically, vocally and in habitat choice to Desert Lark (Ammomanes deserti), and likely to be more closely related to that species. Birds from southern India often separated as subspecies testacea, but appear indistinguishable from other populations.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
phoenicura (Franklin, 1831) - North-eastern Pakistan and most of India.
