Habitat
Shallow saline lakes, brackish or saline pools, rivers, seasonally flooded wetlands, farm dams, reservoirs, coastal shorelines, estuaries, lagoons, tidal mudflats and wastewater treatment ponds.

Range (Guide)

Angola, Botswana, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the] (B), Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Cameroon, Ghana, Israel, Lesotho, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Malawi, Swaziland.

Sudan and Ethiopia to Namibia and South Africa.

Population
Estimated population is 110,000 - 260,000 (2010).

Status LC
Habitat loss through wetland destruction and degradation, changes in the flood regime, wetland reclamation for suburb and port development, disturbance from tourism, are the main threats.

Omnivorous. Stems, leaves and seeds of pondweeds, aquatic insects, crustaceans, tadpoles.
