Subspecies
Considerable intergradation between most of the described subspecies suggests that much of the variation observed is probably clinal, and therefore the validity of many subspecies is dubious. Subspecies affinis doubtfully distinct from nominate cruentus, as is holoptilus from rocki, and annae from berezowskii.
The following 14 subspecies are recognised:
cruentus (Hardwicke, 1821) - Nepal.
affinis Beebe, 1912 - North-eastern India (Sikkim).
tibetanus Baker, ECS, 1914 - Eastern Bhutan and south-eastern Tibet.
kuseri Beebe, 1912 - North-eastern India (Upper Assam) and south-eastern Tibet.
