Subspecies
Several subspecies in center of range have been described (salina and atrogularis) but distinctions very slight, and better treated as synonyms of nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • homochroa (Tristram, 1859)   -  Northern Africa (including once Mauritania) east to north-western Egypt. Non-breeding Sahara and northern Sahel (Mauritania east to Chad).
  • deserti (Temminck, 1825)   -  North-eastern Egypt and Levant east, discontinuously, to Azerbaijan (probably Armenia), southern Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Mongolia. Non-breeding north-eastern Africa (including Socotra I) and south-western Asia.
  • oreophila (Oberholser, 1900)   -  Kashmir east to Nepal, Pamir, Tibetan Plateau and western China (southern Xinjiang). Non-breeding Arabia, south-western Asia and north-western and central India.
  • atrogularis (Blyth, 1847)   -  Transcaucasia and Iran to Afghanistan and Mongolia.
