Recent molecular-genetic research suggests that the Galapagos group consisting of present genus and Platyspiza, Camarhynchus and Geospiza, known collectively as "Darwin's finches", is allied to the tanagers (Thraupidae), being closest to Coereba, Tiaris and several Caribbean genera. Molecular data indicate that present genus is basal within the monophyletic lineage of Darwin's finches, and comprises two distinct and old lineages, the divergence of these two lineages pre-dating the radiation of all other Darwin's finches. Another study, including individuals from all 16 island populations of this genus, found that genetic and geographical distances are not correlated, and that genetic variation over a large area of the archipelago (the small peripheral islands) is very small. The data reveal two separate lineages, now treated as two species, namely present species and Certhidea fusca.
