Subspecies
Northern subspecies have sometimes been regarded as constituting a distinct species. Birds from mountains of southern Bahia may represent a further, hitherto undescribed species, based partly on larger size and also suspected vocal differences. A taxonomic study currently in progress.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
aemulus (Hellmayr, 1920) - South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
griseiventris von Berlepsch & Hartert, 1902 - Eastern Venezuela (Bolívar), the Guaianas and northern Brazil (south to upper R Purús in western and to R Amazon in east). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Lemon-chested Greenlet (Hylophilus griseiventris).
thoracicus Temminck, 1822 - Eastern Brazil (south-eastern Minas Gerais, southern Bahia, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, possibly also parts of Sío Paulo).
