Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest and high altitude shrubland.

Range (Guide)

Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

Highest mountains of Central Range in Snow and Star Mts, including Nassau Range, Mt Capella and Dokfuma Meadow, in west-central New Guinea.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
A buzzing 'chsh' uttered in alarm.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a superspecies with Long-bearded Honeyeater (Melidectes princeps), and both species, together with Sooty Honeyeater (Melidectes fuscus), are sometimes placed in a separate genus, Melionyx. These three, along with Bismarck Honeyeater (Vosea whitemanensis), comprise a group of medium-sized species that differ from others in genus in size, morphology, plumage and voice. Length of bill may vary, being longer in Star Mts than in Snow Mts. Further study is required.
