Habitat
Coastal mangroves and nearby woodlands, trees in coastal towns, often in small flocks, foraging in the canopy and at low tide fossicking among magrove roots.

Nest
Ope, cup-shaped, composed of dried sea-grasses, weeds, and dead leaves, lined with fine rootlets, usually in the foliage of a mangrove, within 1 - meters of the ground.

2; pale salmon-pink, spotted red-brown; oval; 23 x 17 mm.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Singing Honeyeater (Gavicalis virescens) and Varied Honeyeater (Gavicalis versicolor). Formerly considered conspecific with Varied Honeyeater (Gavicalis versicolor), with which it apparently hybridizes to limited extent at northern end of range (near Townsville).
Similar Species
Varied Honeyeater (Gavicalis versicolor) which has a yellow streaked upper breast lacking any barring and Singing Honeyeater (Gavicalis virescens) which has a grey streaked upper breast lacking any barring and also lacks a white patch on the side of the neck.
