Subspecies
Inezia subflava (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Amazonian Tyrannulet (Inezia subflava) and Pale-tipped Tyrannulet (Inezia caudata) following SACC (2005).
Genus as currently constituted is probably polyphyletic. Closely related to Pale-tipped Tyrannulet (Inezia caudata) and formerly considered conspecific. Recently split on basis of differences in plumage, iris colour and, especially, vocal behaviour.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
obscura Zimmer, JT, 1939 - Southern Venezuela (Amazonas), adjacent south-eastern Colombia (eastern Guainía, eastern Vaupés) and north-western Brazil (vicinity of upper R Negro).
subflava (Salvin, 1897) - East-central Brazil (lower R Negro and lower R Madeira east to Pará) and extreme northern Bolivia (Beni, north-eastern Santa Cruz); probably also in intervening region of Amazon Basin.
