Eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz) through eastern Paraguay (Oriente) and extreme north-western Argentina (Misiones) to south-eastern Brazil (Espírito Santo south to Rio Grande do Sul).

Subspecies
Cypseloides fumigatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was provisionally split into Sooty Swift (Cypseloides fumigatus) and Rothschild's Swift (Cypseloides rothschildi) by Stotz et al. (1996) but this treatment has not been adopted, following SACC (2005).
