Subspecies
Forms a parapatric species pair with Golden-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris chrysoptera), and these may form superspecies with Orange-chinned Parakeet (Brotogeris jugularis). Subspecies gustavi may be separate species, although intermediates between this and nominate subspecies have been found in lower Huallaga Valley.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cyanoptera (Salvadori, 1891) - South-eastern Colombia and southern Venezuela to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and west-central Brazil.
gustavi von Berlepsch, 1889 - Upper Huallaga, northern Peru.
