Subspecies
Closest relatives probably Lord Derby's Parakeet (Psittacula derbiana) and Nicobar Parakeet (Psittacula caniceps), despite size differences.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
fasciata (Müller, PLS, 1776) - Northern India east through Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, extreme northern Peninsular Malaysia and Indochina to southern China and Hainan.
abbotti (Oberholser, 1919) - Andaman Is.
cala (Oberholser, 1912) - Simeulue I.
major (Richmond, 1902) - Lasia and Babi Is.
perionca (Oberholser, 1912) - Nias I.
alexandri (Linnaeus, 1758) - Java, Bali and extreme southern Borneo.
