First Described (Guide)
(Gould, 1832)

Habitat
Open pine forest on relatively flat plateaus with large numbers of snags for foraging and nesting. From 1,675 - 3,050 m.

Range (Guide)
Mexico (E) (B).

Western Mexico in Sierra Madre Occidental, from western Sonora and Chihuahua south to Jalisco and Michoacán (probably extinct).
 
Population
Estimated population is <50 (2010).

Status PE
Habitat loss and hunting are the main threats.

Food
Mainly beetle larvae.

Voice
Reportedly toy-trumpet like calls.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis).

No subspecies.
