Habitat
Poorly known. Lowland evergreen forest and forest edge. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia (B), Ecuador (B).

Western Colombia (western Antioquia south to Nari�o) and north-western Ecuador (south to north-western Pichincha).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through intensive logging, human settlement, cattle-grazing, mining and coca and palm cultivation, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-rumped Woodpecker (Veniliornis kirkii), Golden-collared Woodpecker (Veniliornis cassini), Red-stained Woodpecker (Veniliornis affinis) and Yellow-eared Woodpecker (Veniliornis maculifrons). Has often been treated as conspecific with Golden-collared Woodpecker (Veniliornis cassini) or Red-stained Woodpecker (Veniliornis affinis), but differs in plumage details, in size and in habitat preferences, apparently also vocally, and is separated from both by Andes chain.

No subspecies.
