Breeds from southern Canada (central Saskatchewan, locally from Alberta, east to southern Newfoundland and Nova Scotia) south in north-eastern USA to central Wisonsin and New England, and in Appalachians to extreme northern Georgia. Migrates to Central America and north-western South America, south in Andes to central Peru and, less commonly, central Bolivia.

Affinities within genus uncertain. Some suggestions that closest relative may be Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea), this based mainly on similarity of songs. Has hybridized with Bay-breasted Warbler (Setophaga castanea) and at least once with Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia), also possibly with Chestnut-sided Warbler (Setophaga pensylvanica) and possibly with Kirtland's Warbler (Setophaga kirtlandii).
