Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to cultivation and pasture is the main threat.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

elisabeth (Lembeye, 1850) - Western and eastern Cuba.
retrusus Bangs & Zappey, 1905 - I of Pines.
