Habitat
Subtropical swamps.

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda (B), Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica (B) (NB), Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico (B), St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British) (B) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (B) (NB).

Vagrant to Greenland, Portugal, South Africa, St Pierre and Miquelon (P), Uruguay.

Northern America, from Massachusetts to Florida and thence to eastern Mexico and western Indies; also from southern part of Gulf of California through Central America into northern half of South America, extending south to Peru, Bolivia and southern Brazil.
 
Population
Estimated population is 300,000 - 450,000 (2010).

A platform of sticks in a tree or shrub. In colonies, often with other heron species.
