Vagrant to Greenland.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Bogota Rail (Rallus semiplumbeus) and Austral Rail (Rallus antarcticus). Austral Rail (Rallus antarcticus) sometimes considered a subspecies of this species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • limicola Vieillot, 1819   -  Southern Canada and west, central and north-eastern USA. Winters from south-western Canada and eastern Great Lakes through southern USA and Mexico to Guatemala.
  • friedmanni Dickerman, 1966   -  Volcanic belt of central-southern Mexico to extreme southern Mexico to Guatemala.
  • aequatorialis Sharpe, 1894   -  Extreme south-western Colombia, and Andes of Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Ecuadorian Rail (Rallus aequatorialis). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ecuadorian Rail (Rallus aequatorialis).
