Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction through the expansion of cacao, coffee and tobacco production, dry-season burning, drainage, agricultural expansion and introduced predators, hunting and trapping, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Like most of congeners, formerly placed in genus Oreopeleia. Probably forms a superspecies with Crested Quail-Dove (Geotrygon versicolor), with which shares chestnut underwing and lack of black head markings.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
caniceps (Gundlach, 1852) - Cuba.
leucometopius (Chapman, 1917) - Dominican Republic. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-fronted Quail-Dove (Geotrygon leucometopia).
