First Described (Guide)
(Linnaeus, 1758)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, dry forest. From sea-level - 1,900 m.

Range (Guide)
Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Canada (B) (P), Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, St Pierre and Miquelon (P), Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B).

Vagrant to Jamaica.

Southern Canada (central Alberta east to Nova Scotia) and central and eastern USA (North Dakota east to Maine, and south to southern Texas and Florida. Winters from central Mexico to western Panama, and also in southern Florida (USA)
 
Population
Estimated population is 7,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Mellisuga. Alternatively linked with Selasphorus. On occasion, considered to form a superspecies with Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) and some authors would also include Costa's Hummingbird (Calypte costae).

No subspecies.
